While its dazzling white beaches are not much different from those you will find on a dozen other Caribbean islands, JamaicaBs remarkably dense tropical landscape and soaring Blue Mountains, with their perfect coffee-growing terrain, has far more than the sun, ocean, and sand, to recommend it as a cruise destination. Jamaica has more than 100 rivers plunging and tumbling from their mountain sources on their way to the sea, miles of hiking and equestrian trails, and jungle canopy tours to appeal to the most adventuresome cruise enthusiasts.
JamaicaBs northern coast is where you find MoB (for Montego) Bay and Ocho Rios, its two busiest resort towns. Montego Bay is home to the CHip Strip,D formerly known as Gloucester Avenue, where you will find plenty of shops, restaurants, and clubs. If you want a natural healing experience, you could head for the mineral springs at Montego BayBs DoctorBs Cave Beach.
A more family-friendly port-of-call, Ocho Rios is home to one of JamaicaBs biggest craft markets, along with an abundance of duty-free shops and a generally more relaxed lifestyle. Perhaps the most stunning of all JamaicaBs three ports-of-call, however, is its smallest one. Port Antonio, on JamaicaBs north east coast was, in days gone by, a magnet for Hollywood elite and the favorite hideaway for Errol Flynn.
Far removed from its three most popular ports of call is JamaicaBs capital city of Kingston, which is also the largest English-speaking city in the Caribbean. Jamaica has a rather turbulent history, beginning with its reputation for harboring pirates centuries ago.
Most Jamaican sailing cruises are scheduled between January and March, which is also JamaicaBs peak tourist season. You probably will not be able to book a Jamaica sailing cruise between July and November, when the heat, heavy rains, and possible cyclone conditions make it too dangerous to sail.
When making arrangements for your Jamaica sailing cruise, pay attention to the legal details. Once you have reached Jamaica, you will have to let customs know that you have arrived and give them access to your ship for inspection. They will ask you, or whoever is managing your Jamaica sailing cruise, to supply information which includes your cruise shipBs registration, team list and affirmation, a record of the shipBs stores, and your departure permission. While many amateur sailors arrive at Jamaica in their own yachts, the great majority of tourists taking Jamaican sailing cruise vacations simply rent their boats. Most of these sailing cruises last between seven and 10 days, departing from Montego Bay, the site of JamaicaBs airport. Negril, however, is another ideal departure point for a Jamaica sailing cruise.
You have a choice of three different types of ships for your Jamaican sailing cruise. There are crewed charters, skippered bareboats, and, if you are an accomplished sailor, bareboats. If youBre new to Jamaica, getting a skippered or crewed boat will ensure that your sailing cruise hits the largest number of attractions. Having a crew on board will also give you as much free time as you like to enjoy JamaicaBs remarkable beauty!

Solution That Reduces Marine Fuel And Energy Costs
Often a story about marine equipment is as much about the people who create or produce the equipment, as it is about how elegant or effective the equipment is. For the last 15 years, Barbara and Ted Mark, at Next Wave Marine Systems, have been supplying vessel owners throughout North America with their patented SuredriveTM, a drive system coupler that reduces drive line vibration, while increasing the reliability of the driveline. Next Wave Marine has now developed a hydrostatic transmission that improves reliability and safety while reducing fuel consumption and pollution.
The SVS MT has demonstrated savings in fuel and energy efficiency, reduced pollution due to uncombusted fuels, improved maneuvering and handling, and increased reliability. Vessel operators have discovered that they may be able to install smaller main engines, they will consume 20 to 30% less fuel while operating the vessel at its design speed and load characteristics, and they will not see the oily residue in the exhaust water that results from uncombusted fuel. Additional benefits of the system include quieter operation without both the noise of gear clatter, and / or high speed engine generated noise and vibration. In some vessels, the engines can be relocated to the best position for weight and balance of the vessel.
What Ted has done is to literally cut out the inefficient components of the traditional fixed gear ratio transmission and solid drive shaft system. These have been replaced with a continuous variable transmission and the use of hydraulics to transfer the engine power to the propeller. This saves fuel and energy by operating the engine at its peak Torque RPM, or optimum RPM constantly. Power is transferred to the propeller(s) as required for the operation (the propeller can rotate anywhere between 0 and full RPMs as well as switch from forward to reverse with the simple shifting of one lever).
Dave Gerr in his Propeller Handbook notes C5The fixed ratio marine transmission is a LOCKED IN COMPROMISE5. the maximum torque of most engines occurs below maximum RPM. This presents 5(a) conflict for propeller selection. Although the propeller must be chosen so that the engine can approach very close to its top rated RPM, the RPM at maximum torque frequently is as low as 50 percent of top RPM. The only thing to do is compromise, and in so 5compromise5 fuel consumption and engine longevity 5. Specific fuel consumption is usually lowest at around 70 percent of top RPM, and torque at this RPM is at itBs maximum. For this reason, the most economical and efficient speed of operation of many engines is around 70 to 85 percent of the top rated RPM5..D The SVS-MT allows the engine to operate continuously at the RPM that provides the highest power and 70% fuel consumption.
Richard Schoel is a retired US Coast Guard Commander, now working as commercial fisherman in Alaska and owns an SVS-MT. His vessel has now completed four trouble free seasons using the SVS-MT. In his words C5The engine can be installed in a convenient location and is not hooked to the prop shaft. This gives quieter living spaces. There is no shaft vibration which greatly reduces noise 5 variable speed5 is fantastic for manoeuvring, docking, troll fishing, pot pulling, long lining or just cruising. There is no need to deploy stabilizers, buckets and drogues to slow the boat for fishing. Shaft RPM can be from zero to cruise speed by the touch of a lever. There is no more hesitation for a transmission to shift. Forward to reverse is instant and smooth5D
John Main, skipper of the Justin Time III, also using an SVS-MT commented that C The fuel savings alone totalled 1516 liters of fuel5 oil consumption was m compared to last year because with the new system, we were able to run one engine rather than two engines5.The boat packed our prawns and gear better because we were approx. 5000 lbs lighter5I had three times the room in the engine room, because the new engine was mounted sideways in the stern of the boat5 the transmission is about m as big as a twin disc and about l the weight5D

The general luxury super yacht charter fee rents you the boat and the services of the boat crew, for your stated luxury charter period, e.g. the base vessel charter fee per week. Unless stated otherwise, food, drink, and fuel will be extra "expenses". There will normally be mooring fees and possibly fees for scuba, water toys and certain communications.
Luxury Mega Super Yacht Charters and APA
To facilitate the management of these expenses, and build trust, the industry has developed the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) system. The Charter Operator/Central Agent estimates the expenses that will be incurred, depending on your luxury itinerary (usually 20% to 30% of the charter fee) and adds that on up front. This provides a bank account for the Skipper, who makes expenditures on your behalf and keeps accurate records. Please note that these expenses are not marked up. At the end of the luxury mega super yacht charter, you will be refunded the difference, or the boat Captain will ask you to pay more during the charter cruise if further running costs are incurred.
Normally, you will be asked to pay 1/2 of the luxury mega super yacht charter fee upon signing the yacht charter contract, and the remaining 1/2 approximately 30 days before the charter commences. For obvious reasons, the luxury mega super yacht charter will not begin until all charter payments are made. Tipping is not obligatory but is at the discretion of the charterer. Common practice on luxury Super Yacht charters is normally between 5% - 20% of the total charter price, on a sliding scale depending on how satisfied you are with the boat crew's performance (regional differences exist - yachts working with Americans tend to expect higher tips than yachts working with Europeans or those from other parts of the world.)
Other Luxury Mega Super Yacht Charter Useful Information.

Marine Surveyor - How To Choose
Buying a used yacht/boat is always a stressful process with offers and counter-offers, sea trials, lien checks, documentation and insurance. Once a potential boat is located, a marine survey is always recommended to make sure you are getting what you are paying for and there are no hidden surprises.
For starters, if you are dealing with a reputable Yacht Broker such as me, he will guide you through the process. I know several marine surveyors that I will recommend as IBve had experience with them in the past and I know their capabilities. I will not choose one for you however, as I donBt want any suggestion of a conflict of interest. The surveyor works for you!
There are several types of surveys but for you as a buyer, the Pre-Purchase Survey is the one you will want. It will be the most comprehensive type of inspection, and is usually requested by lenders and insurance companies when purchasing a used vessel. The yachtBs condition and overall operation of the vessel will be thoroughly examined. The value of the yacht will also be estimated by the surveyor.
If your Yacht Broker gives you the names of surveyors, ask your Broker questions about the surveyor, then check them out yourself. Although not required, surveyors typically belong to one or more certification boards. SAMS, the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors is probably the one used most often in the US. SAMS provides training to surveyors and certifies them as to inspecting specific types of boats and yachts.
Step 1 - Go to the surveyorBs website if he/she has one. Read what his/her qualifications are relative to your chosen vessel.
Step 2 - Contact the surveyor personally; ask him/her about his qualifications to survey your chosen boat; how many yachts like yours has he performed surveys upon? Can he provide customer references?
Step 3 - Ask him how he conducts his survey.
For example, how does he evaluate deck moisture readings, how does he evaluate bonding systems, how does he evaluate hull hydrolysis, will he climb the sailboat mast to inspect rigging if you are buying a sailboat, how does he evaluate engine mechanical health, oil sampling perhaps? Does he check the Hull ID to make sure the boat is not stolen; request that a rubbing be made to provide to the insurance carrier? Ask how long the survey will take and how much it will cost; how long it will take to get the final report. Will the report be handled electronically or by mail? Ask enough questions to get a good feeling that the person you are hiring to evaluate your boat is competent and has your best interest in mind.
Surveys provide good information on the vessels' condition, but they are not total guarantees as to the complete condition of the vessel. To perform such a survey would require disassembly of the boat and we know thatBs not practical. The surveyor reports the condition of accessible areas only as it exists at the time of inspection.

Home Building A Fishing Boat
One of the most popular uses for boats is for fishing. People sometimes look at the bewildering array of available boat types and are confused about what type is most useful for them. Hopefully this article will make you aware of the various types of fishing boats there are so you can do a good job going about picking the best design for you to build in your home workshop.
If you primarily intend to fish in rivers, especially smaller, fast moving rivers, youBll want a drift boat, that is one that is primarily intended to drift down rivers. There are two types of these, the Western style, sometimes called, McKenzie River drift boats, and Midwestern style drift boats less for canyon shooting in the mountainous West, and more for smaller rivers and streams common throughout the US. The Midwestern style can be rowed much faster and with more control than the Western types intended only for drifting downriver, where the oars are only used for keeping the boat pointed downriver.
If you intend to fish on lakes, bays and protected waters, you have a choice of quite a few designs. If you intend to both row and use moderate power, there are few better choices than a Carolina style dory. These easy-to-build boats get up and plane easily, carry lots of load, are quite stable and yet still may be rowed in a pinch.
If you want to go fast, under primarily engine power, and still plan to mostly fish in wide rivers, lakes, bays, etc., a semi-vee or full vee bottom power boat may be your best choice., These come from smaller F two passenger sizes, easily tailored behind a small car, all the way to big, 6 or 8 passenger models that can also handle sea conditions. Another option for this kind of conditions is the Pacific power dory. These highly stable and efficient hulls can outperform commercially made fiberglass models and can be built for a fraction of what a new boat costs.
If youBd like a man-powered or small engine boat you can toss in the back of a pickup or on a car roof and head to a stream, lake, bay or bayou, consider one of the ultra-light boats with plans available. They come in various shapes, from prams and dories, to canoes and kayaks. Larger sea-kayaks are suitable for fishing and waterfowl hunting. Using modern materials some of these boats can weigh as little as 40 lbs so can be carried to the water with one hand.
Finally, if you want to use your boat to fish in the ocean, youBll be faced with very different conditions than in protected waters so need to look for a boat designed for ocean conditions. Vee bottom Carolina dories, Pacific power dories, and vee bottom center console boats are all suitable for coastal conditions, and also will outperform heavier factory made boats and may be used with smaller, more economical engines.
For offshore conditions, very specialized craft are called for. Grand Banks dories are some of the most seaworthy boats ever designed. TheyBll power through any weather, though theyBre no speed demons, and can also be sailed. In 1876 (the USABs 100th birthday year) an 18-foot open dory, named the Centennial was used on the first single-handed North Atlantic crossing from New York to England. Other candidates for home built offshore fishing boats include Hawaiian sampans, mullet skiffs, and larger vee bottom Carolina dories. Each has their pluses and minuses, depending on whether speed, economy, or a smooth ride is the more important characteristic.

Each has their pluses and minuses, depending on whether speed, economy, or a smooth ride is the more important characteristic.

Shield Your Boat With Boat Covers
Boating is a great hobby among the adventure-freaks. Boats also need maintenance when not used. Hence, the concept of boat covers comes into picture.
This fungus can completely damage the exterior finish of your boat. These covers are not at all expensive. And, moreover, it is nothing compared to the cost of the upkeep of the boat. These covers increase the durability of boats. Boat covers can be both made from sturdy canvas or rough polyester.
These boat covers are excellent labels for your marine vehicles because the quality of the boats gets ruined in water. Rain, storm and corrosion are prominent reasons for such damage. The tarps can also be taken anywhere you desire. If no storage is available in a particular docking area, then these covers can be just spread on the boat. If you have a trailer attached to your boat, then the quick release buckle and strap systems are perfect.
Boaters are usually worried about the quality of their boats but they have no reason to do so now, because the boat covers will protect their boats from the forces of nature. Most of the boating covers also have vents that can prevent it from inflating due to strong winds.
These traditional boat covers are a must for safeguarding the boat from wear and tear. They also reduce the maintenance and cleaning expenses for your boat. A ferry and canoe can also be covered with the help of a boat tarp. Sailboats are perfect compliment for an adventure lover, and with boat covers they become even more exquisite.

Spectacular Boat Trips In The Firth Of Lorne
The Firth of Lorne, on the Scottish West Coast, is boat trip paradise. Fascinating islands, tidal races, stunning scenery, rare and exciting wildlife, and the third largest whirlpool in the world all add up to a day out to remember. Boat trips here are anything from thirty minutes for a quick visit to a seal colony, to five or six hours to whale watching in the turbulent waters surrounding the Isle of Jura.
Without doubt, the biggest and most popular attraction is the infamous and dramatic Corryvreckan whirlpool. It lies between the islands of Jura and Scarba in a gulf about a mile wide and two miles long. A giant pinnacle rises up from the sea floor to within 30 metres of the surface. When the tides flow into the gulf and over the pinnacle it causes massive whirlpools and 30 metre waves that appear in seconds. At full force, the whirlpool's roar can be heard ten miles away.
Scarba and Jura
The islands of Scarba and Jura lie just off the coast in the Firth of Lorne. Their rugged, hilly landscapes are home to thousands of red deer which are often seen by boat trippers as they graze on cliff tops and beaches. Also visible by boat are seal colonies, sea otters and small herds of feral goats. Along with some smaller nearby islets, Scarba forms part of the Scarba, Lunga and the Garvellachs National Scenic Area. To the north of the island are the Grey Dogs; a tidal race that runs around 8 knots and is a favourite spot for sea kayakers.
Jura is larger than Scarba and, unlike its neighbour, is inhabited. By boat magnificent views are afforded of the famous Paps of Jura; three conical mountains popular with hillwalkers. A boat trip to Jura will undoubtedly yield sightings of the island's 5000 plus red deer. Jura deer are known for their huge size, and there's nothing quite like seeing a majestic stag standing on the skyline.
The Garvellachs
These exciting islands lie further out beyond Scarba across an open sea tidal stream called "The Great Race." This is a favourite spot with geologists due to its interesting and unique sea cliffs which can only be seen properly by boat. It is possible to land on the islands and visit the ruined site of 6th century St. Brendan's Monastery, a ruined hill fort and a good example of an early Christian beehive cell.
Whales, Dolphins and Eagles
The Firth of Lorne is a Special Area of Conservation because of its abundant wildlife. A huge array of birdlife covers these waters. The more common types are gannets, auks, storm petrels and manx shearwaters including some rarer species such as the black-throated diver. However, the rarest and most spectacular birds in the area are the eagles. Golden eagles nest and hunt around the cliffs and hillsides of Scarba, Jura and the Garvellachs and are often seen either perched on the cliffs or soaring on the thermals. Even rarer is the white-tailed sea eagle. These striking birds nest on Jura, one of the only places in the UK to see them. During the warmer months, almost every trip by boat to this area will yield sightings of either whales, dolphins and porpoises. The Gulf of Corryvreckan is a good place to see them because of the rich feeding grounds. The thirty plus foot Minke whales arrive around May and provide much excitement, especially when spotted for the first time. Porpoises are a more common sight as they surface and dart through the water, sometimes right under the boat, while bottlenose dolphins love bow-riding boats.
The Firth of Lorne area has some of the most unique scenery, wildlife and sealife in the UK and is best explored by boat. Just remember to take good binoculars and a camera!

Useful Knowledge For Used Boat, New Boat, Or Boating. Knots Volume 1
Different types of knots, tight interlacing of two ropes. A knot is also a unit of speed in aviation and marine navigation equal to one nautical mile per hour.
Reef knot- interlacing of ropes made of two half-knots inverse to each other.
Bowline- interlacing of ropes with a loop that can be used as support.
Two round turns and a half-hitch- interlacing of ropes around an object by making two turns, then a hal-knot.
Two half-hitches- interlacing of ropes around an object by making two half-knots, one after the other.
Double shell bend- double interlacing of ropes, used to attach two ropes together.
Sheet knot- interlacing of ropes used to attach two ropes together.
Figure of eight knot- interlacing of ropes used to finish the end of a rope.
Overhand knot- simple interlacing of a rope.

Bluewater Sailing
Ocean- sailing is more than recreation; it is a learning platform, observation post, a transportation system for awareness, and a delivery system for understanding.
Ocean cruising can be one of the most miserable and enjoyable sports in the world, both at the same time.
Ocean cruising people have learned how to manage their lives, including relationships and money, because they must. Ocean sailing presents real problems that require real solutions, that canBt be ignored. Life or death are the only two options.
Ocean cruising is an educational opportunity that has rich potential for the development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are difficult to teach in the confines of the classroom. . Ocean sailing is a fantastic tool for honing individual and team skills. Bluewater sailing is first, the most wonderful and liberating experience. But it has its own risks that require special care to avoid.
Sailboats were used by the Greeks and Egyptians several thousand years before the birth of Christ. But designs have changes as have the sailors. Designers of bluewater sailboats have taken how boats are sailed today into consideration, considering the extra weight and speed the boats will need. And yes, cruising sailboats are compromises in every sense.
Boats built for speed are much more fragile than those built for durability. But a boatBs seaworthiness has a lot to do with knowledge. Seaworthiness means something very different on sheltered lakes than on vast oceans.
When stability is compromised the boat is not equal to the conditions it is facing.
Perhaps the following broader definition is closer to what modern designers aim for; a seaworthy sailboat is one that is able to recover quickly from a 180-degree capsize without serious damage and without sinking. Strong enough to look after herself while hove, free of violent, jerky rolling and pounding, well-balanced, docile on the helm, and easily handled at all times agile downwind and able to beat to windward, or at least hold her ground, in all but the heaviest of conditions.
She must able to carry ample crew with good headroom and comfort, plus water and supplies, for extended periods and be capable of good average speeds on long passages.
In Principles of Yacht Design, Larsson and Eliasson note that the seaworthiness of a sailing yacht depends on its dynamic behavior in a seaway; and dynamic effects, naturally, are much more difficult to measure or predict than static effects. (Any boat may be turned turtle by a breaking wave with a height 55 percent of her overall length.
Images of blue water sailboats conjure up names such as Heritage, Contessa, Fisher, Ocean, Tayana and Roberts. So what are the important features to look for in a blue water sailboat?
Pleasing to the eye. Can you love the boat--you know there will be issues with her, so she has to make your heart smile while you work through them and accept them or else you'll get dissatisfied and grumpy.
35' - 40' on deck. Big enough to be sea-kindly and safe in bad weather, yet small enough for one to single-hand if you had to.
Good survey. Sound condition and structure, and a dry boat. No need to keep everything wrapped in plastic.
Good ventilation. . Air conditioning will not be a priority on the high seas.
Heavy displacement cruiser with a full keel and attached rudder. Able to take care of you in bad weather while you hunker down below.
Inboard diesel engine powered at not less than 3 hp/ton. Sufficient power to make your way motoring or motor-sailing when necessary, or to power up and get out of a tight spot.
Solid fiberglass hull. Easy to maintain and not laminated.
Fiberglass deck (not teak). Easy to maintain, and no leaks.
Plenty of accessible and well-ventilated storage. This will be your home, so you need enough room for books and other comforts, plus all the spares, tools, etc. for blue-water cruising.
Bulwarks with scuppers. Good solid footing while walking around the deck, and good drainage in downpours or shipping green water.
Strong through-bolted deck cleats. Strong attachments for docklines and anchor snubber.
Dual bow anchors, one with minimum of 200' chain. Second anchor for storm conditions, and plenty of chain for normal conditions.
100 gallon fuel tank. Enough to give you a range of at least 500 n miles under power.
Large water tanks. Enough to last the crew 3-4 weeks without rain catching, or watermaker.
Small aft cockpit with drains and strong pad eyes for attachment. Comfortable and safe for whoever's on watch, and safe in a seaway, with ability to drain fast if much water is shipped.
Aluminum keel-stepped mast. Minimal maintenance and more support than deck-stepped.
Good handholds and foot space on deck for moving around. Essential for safety.
Good handholds and headroom below. Headroom for a 6' person, and solid handholds for moving around below when the seas are up.
Sails: Jib with roller furling. Easy to handle from the cockpit.
Sails: Staysail that hanks on. Bulletproof system, no furling gear to jam, and easy to remove and switch to storm jib.
Sails: Storm jib. For use on the inner forestay (replacing the staysail) in storm situations--the Tayana 37' heaves to well with this configuration.
Sails: Storm trysail with separate mast track. For use in a storm, without having to remove the mainsail. Also, useful for stability while sailing downwind.
Dodger, splash cloths, and bimini. Dodger with easy visibility forward to keep the wind out of the cockpit, and along with splash cloths keep crew in the cockpit dry when water is shipped, and Bimini to shade us from the tropical sun.
V-berth with double bed on one side, all berths accommodating 6'. Good space to snuggle, and comfort for tall crew.
Refrigerator. Minimal electrical requirements but yet enough space to keep stuff cool, a freezer would also be good.
Starting battery separate from house batteries with a battery monitoring system. Enough electrical storage to light and cool the boat, plus run our basic electrical equipment without excessive recharging requirements. Easy way to tell the condition of the batteries (input, output, voltage, status)
Autopilot. To relieve the helmsman when under power.
Wind vane. To relieve the helmsman while sailing without draining the battery.
Swim ladder An easy to drop and retrieve swim ladder on the side of the boat.
Lee cloths for the cabin berths. Comfort and security for the off-watch crew to sleep below.
3-burner propane stove with oven. Able to cook pretty much whatever we want.
Instructions for all the equipment. So you can figure out how to fix things, or find out where to go for advice and spares.
Maintenance record. To know how old the rigging is, what the service record is for the engine, hull, plumbing, and electrical system, etc.
Diesel cabin heater. To keep you warm on cold nights.
Life raft, MOB module, flares, fire blanket, propane and CO detectors, and fire extinguishers. Essential safety equipment.
Radios--marine SSB with ham bands and GMDSS VHF. Essential communication equipment.
Dinghy with motor. Ability to get around when at anchor.
Radar. Essential for navigation at night when near land, or in shipping areas, or of course in fog. Also a tremendous assist when approaching an unfamiliar harbor with a hard-to-find entrance, or entering or leaving an anchorage at night.
Wind instruments (vane and speed) and depth sounder. Depth sounder essential, wind instruments very helpful.
Well there you have it, fair winds.

Luxury Mega Super Yacht Charter costs.
